The route of ascent on Elbrus from the north side is an ascent on the path of the first Alpinists. In 1829 the first expedition on Elbrus took place under the guidance of Russian army general G. A. Emanuel. When approaching Caucasus, Emanuel met with the leaders of Karachai and Balkarian people, prince Islam Krimshauhal and Mirzakula Urusby, who gave him five strongest highland hunters. The history remembers only two of them: Killar Khashirov and Ahia Sottaev. Besides them five scientists went to the top under the leadership of 30 years old academician Adolf Coopfer. Among the scientists the most athletic-looking was 25 years old Emiliy Lenz shortly before he came from the three-year world cruise. There were also Cossacks (20 of them went up). In spite of the fact that general Emanuel organized competition (the first speed-ascent on Elbrus) with monetary prizes, the peak was reached by the single participant only – Killar Khashirov. |
